Guide to Taxis:  Producing Taxi Drivers' Licence

The Offence

It is an offence to fail to produce, within 5 days of being requested, either:

(i) a taxi drivers' licence; or
(ii) a private hire drivers' licence;

at the request of either:

(i) an authorised council officer (you produce at the Council's principal offices);  or
(ii) a police officer (you produce at the police station you nominate within the Council's area).

Do I need an NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) for the offence of failing to produce a taxi or private hire drivers' licence?

No, there is not a requirement for an NIP for offences relating to producing a taxi/private hire drivers' licence.

Punishment

Fine up to £1,000.00.

Defences

Any Defence in this area turns on whether you had reasonable explanation as to why you did not produce your licence.  Do not just accept it if it is alleged that you have committed an offence in relation to taxis as there may be an exception to the rules which applies to your situation.  If you face an allegation of a taxi related offence, we advise you contact us to take specialist legal advice.

Don't wait until it's too late. Call Motor Defence Team now, on 0800 2800 912, for a fixed fee consultation with a specialist lawyer.
