The Offence

It is an offence to be either:

1. driving;
2. standing; or
3. plying;

for hire without holding a valid taxi licence or displaying a taxi licence number.
 
In addition, plying for hire without a licence is likely to invalidate your insurance and you may also find you are being prosecuted for driving without insurance as a result.

Do I need an NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) for offences relating to taxi drivers plying for hire?

No, there is not a requirement for an NIP for offences relating to taxi drivers plying for hire.

Punishment

Fine up to £2,500.
