Guide to Taxis:  Carriage of the Disabled & Guide Dogs

The Offence

It is an offence for a taxi driver or taxi company to either:

  • refuse to accept a booking for a disabled person being accompanied by a guide, hearing or prescribed dog; or
  • make an additional charge for carrying them.

Do I need an NIP (Notice of Intended Prosecution) for offences relating to carriage of disabled persons with guide dogs?

No, there is not a requirement for an NIP for offences relating to the carriage of disabled persons with guide dogs.

Punishment

Fine up to £1,000.

Defences

There may be Defences available if you have a certificate from the relevant licensing authority confirming that, on medical grounds, you cannot transport dogs.  However, that certification must be displayed at all times.  If you face an allegation of a taxi or private hire vehicle related offence, we advise you contact us to take specialist legal advice.

Don't wait until it's too late. Call Motor Defence Team now, on 0800 2800 912, for a fixed fee consultation with a specialist lawyer.
