Anti car thief network - Monday 30 June 2008
An American designed system allows cars to network themselves together and auto sense potential thieves
The system, called SVATS (Sensor-network-based Vehicle Anti-theft System), has been designed to produce less false positives then traditional car alarms. When the owner uses a remote control to lock the vehicle, the car sends out 'join' messages to nearby cars to create a network. Periodic 'alive' messages are then pushed around between cars. When the owner returns to the vehicle, unlocking the car would send a 'goodbye' message to the surrounding network. If the network fails to receive an 'alive' message from a car, the alarm is alerted, as if the vehicle has disappeared. Car security experts have criticised the technology as most vehicle thefts occur when the actual keys have been stolen. The system could have potential applications elsewhere. | | |
