Micro bugs make petrol - Wednesday 18 June 2008
Scientists in Silicon Valley have been experimenting with bacteria to make them excrete petrol
The genetically modified single-cell organisms feed on waste agricultural material and then excrete nearly pump-ready petroleum which will also be carbon negative. The company, funded by venture capitalists, has so far managed to produce a barrel a week from a 1000 litre fermenting machine. They estimate that to replace America's reliance on petrol a facility the size of Chicago would be needed. The technology could cut the price of fuel by nearly a third. | | |
