Councils levy illegal fines - Thursday 29 May 2008

The unlawful parking and traffic restrictions range from illegal yellow box junctions, parking bays which were too small, incorrect road markings and improper signage. Even after discovering that certain restrictions were unlawful they still fined motorists. Statistics for last year on success rates for appeals to councils by motorists:

• 60% outside London successful
• 32% outside London not contested by councils
• 28% outside London won by motorists
• 68% appeals in London were successful
