Crash predicting cars - Wednesday 28 May 2008
European engineers have finished testing a car safety device that predicts crashes and reacts by reinforcing the vehicle
The system uses two radars and stereo cameras mounted in the car linked to a computer. If the system decides that an impact is imminent it will release a metal bar within 70 milliseconds that strengthens the cars frame and diverts the energy to the unstruck side of the car. The system can detect a collision within 230 milliseconds. The electronics could be used to make existing safety features pre-emptive, such as deploying airbags or pre-tensioning seat belts a few milliseconds before impact. | | |
