Stinger at the petrol pump - Sunday 25 May 2008

Petrol stations have started installing automatic stinger devices to their forecourts due to a rise in drive-aways

The system, costing £5000, consists of sensors to track whether a vehicle has moved without the driver paying for the petrol. If it has, warning lights go off at the entrance and exit and a tannoy announced that if drivers attempt to leave their tyres will be spiked. Ignoring the warning will trigger a row of brass tipped spikes which embed in the tyre, preventing it from being re-inflated and leave a unique tag inside as well. The rise in 'drive-aways' has been linked to the increasing cost of petrol.
