2020 target for 20mph limit - Saturday 24 May 2008

The government is to set a target of reducing deaths on the road from 3000 to 2000 a year by 2020

They plan to achieve this by reducing the limit on residential roads to 20mph, setting variable limits outside schools during the school run and using variable speed cameras instead of road humps. Research into how effective the 20 mph limit that is currently in force in Portsmouth has shown that about 30% of drivers are ignoring the new limit, although average speeds have dropped by 5mph.
