The speed camera, located in a Melbourne suburb, has been dressed up to look like the robot character from the film Wall-E. A 27 year old artist is responsible utilising cardboard boxes and flannel shirts. Police have tried to press charges of interfering with the speed camera. The artist posted photos of the camera on his facebook page.

The locations of the cameras will be at sites that have a history of road traffic accidents and they aim to reduce the number of speed related accidents. So far this year in Ireland nearly 200 people have been killed on the roads. A map, showing the areas in which the cameras will be deployed is available at www.garda.ie

The new UK transport minister Philip Hammond, has said the government will not fund any new speed camera installations in an attempt to end a 14 year battle against motorists. Brake has said that both motorists and communities approve of using technology to save lives and the governments’ decision was based on an ‘archaic political bias’.

The Home Office is set to approve average speed cameras (SPECS) on residential roads in the New Year

The cameras will be sited at entry and exit points to residential areas and are capable of tracking a vehicle over 15 miles via their wireless network. They will provide a better way of controlling speed than the more traditional chicanes and speed bumps but critics of the idea say that motorists will still be prone to speeding as the system doesn’t factor in traffic lights and junctions.

An Italian based speed camera manufacturer is being accused of fraudThe Police raided the company’s headquarters and seized speed camera devices as evidence. The manufacturer has allegedly deployed cameras bearing the same serial number, thus avoiding mandatory testing requirements under Italian law. In addition, they calibrated some cameras in such a way that motorists who were travelling within the limit received a ticket. The result is that 81,555 tickets that were issued between 2007 and 2009 have been cancelled, penalty points removed and refunds issued (to the tune of 11.3 million Euros).
