Transport Secretary, Lord Adonis, expects the review of drink drive limits to recommend they be cut from 80mg to 50mg

The change would mean that the average man would be restricted to under a pint of beer and the average woman half a pint. The penalties for drink driving may also be cut; currently the minimum ban is 12 months. Most EU countries apply points for minor breaches in drink driving so shorter bans could be introduced if caught with between 50mg and 79mg.

Sir Peter North, is an internationally legal expert whose previous work led to the Road Traffic Act 1991, will look into whether changes to the law and processes can be effective in reducing the number of casualties through drink or drug driving. His report is due by the end of March 2010. The offence of driving whilst over the limit or unfit due to drink or drugs could result in a ban of 12 months, a fine up to £5,000 and possible 6 months in prison.
