The money will go into providing ‘cycle hubs’ at 10 major stations and increasing bike storage at stations to 10,000 places. The cycle hubs will include extra storage facilities, repair services and cycle hire schemes. Current statistics show that 60% of rail commuters live 15 minutes from a station but only 2% of passengers get to the station by bike. Compared to Holland, for example, where a third of all trips to and from rail stations are done by bike.

Research by an insurance company has revealed lower commute times during school holidaysThe most time saved on the morning commute when schools are on holidays was in London, with an average saving of just under 16 minutes. Northern Ireland came second with 13.5 minutes. The South West had the lowest time saving of 9.5 minutes. Whilst those figures do not sound like a lot, when you multiply that over a week it represents a significant amount of time not spent travelling to work.
