The Governments network of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras has recorded an average of 200 journeys per motorist

The network of cameras was initially developed to monitor congestion charging and traffic monitoring but soon developed into an anti-terrorism and policing tool to catch stolen vehicles, drivers with no insurance or road tax as well as to combat terrorism. The network records around 14 million number plates on a daily basis and the database currently holds around 7.5 billion entries.

The information can also be disclosed to other EU countries as well as the US. The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) is currently in talks with the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) to set limits on the amount of time the information can be held.

Bradford has implemented a ‘net’ of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to deter criminal activity in the cityThere are 90 cameras in total and are able to operate in day and night and any adverse weather conditions. The council plan to use the network of cameras to measure journey times whilst West Yorkshire Police are to use the system to track vehicles that may have been used in criminal activities. As the area covered by the cameras is fairly small, they have all routes in and out of the city covered. A list published by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau in 2009 shows Barkerend in Bradford as UK’s uninsured driver capital. In the 6 months since West Yorkshire Police set up the Bradford South Road Policing Unit in October 2009 they had impounded more than 530 vehicles.

A leading motor oil manufacturer has devised an advertising board that uses the DVLA database of registrations to personalise their advertising hoardings.

The system uses automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to scan a passing cars number plate to deliver an advert showing what brand of oil they should buy for their particular vehicle. There are currently 5 of the billboards in London which measure 17ft x 8ft. The company states that no information is stored pertaining to what vehicle passes the sign.
