Humberside police already use such a system, and delays in opening a road after an incident seem to have increased massively. There's only one set of equipment, based in west Hull, and if it's already deployed elsewhere in their area the police seem quite happy to stand around doing nothing for hours whilst road users are massively inconvenienced, just on the off chance of discovering something they can't be bothered to look for using traditional methods, like observation and experience. None of this prevents accidents happening, and doesn't bring the dead back to life. No improvements ever seem to emerge from the process. Just becase technology makes something possible, doesn't always make it desirable or beneficial.

I don't understand why this would/should raise the cost of insurance, cause higher repair bills, or cause greater fuel use. In my experience, most vehicles don't suddenly become gas guzzling rust buckets in a 12 month period, and those that are nearing this catagory surely wouldn't pass their MOTs anyway!
As an example to compare to, my parents vehicle in Florida has been owned by them for over 11 years with absolutely no MOTs required in that time, and is in just as good condition and running order now, as it was when it was first aquired, with no greater service bills or fuel costs than their vehicle in the UK.

It is about time the uk introduced this all over the united kingdom as not many buses use them & we could never slow down a bus as they are always late anyway.

It is about time the goverment did something about boy racers as they think they are better than every one else.Even the deformed ones who dont use seat belts need reschooling, but they probably would not listen as their mobiles are stuck to their faces. They need to learn respect first & just how speed increases their weight, because when ive ever told one off I only see & hear the bleating noise.
Also they have never been told the dangers of high speed in the wet, this also applies to 98% of driver/riders.But all is not lost its about time they learned all this off road like the police do.

Never mind ending british summer time, I think it should be doubled to two hours, First for safety driving at night in the dark after a full days work. But mainly to increase our after work social times and activities.

Am I missing something? Why would the ABI even consider an increase in premiums for someone fitting winter tyres? Surely, if anything, it is to be commended?

As an ex-smoker I agree, to some extent, with the policy that smoking should be banned in public areas, especially where food is concerned although I have no objection to special 'Smoking Allowed' areas. Until I gave up smoking (purely by choice - nothing to do with health/health & safety even though I was a forty to a hundred a day smoker), I did not realise just how offensive the smell of stale tobacco smoke could be. I simply stopped because I wanted to, s'easy.

It took a fair while for my sense of smell to return fully and I (and I assume most other non-smokers) can now smell a smoker, even if they are not actually smoking, from some distance if I am walking behind them. The smell borders on disgusting but it is, and should be, their choice whether or not they smoke.

In the confines of one's own private areas, house, garden, car or whatever, I think it should to be up to personal choice. The 'Nanny' State is already far too intrusive in our everyday lives and seems to be overrun with wierdos who think that they, and only they, know what is best for us.

I would hazard a guess that the most dangerous aspect of smoking in a car is when a lighted cigarette is dropped either in one's lap or between one's legs. The resultant distraction from the road ahead is where the biggest danger lies.

I am not a smoker but I believe this is a step too far. Any smoker I know opens the window before they smoke after asking if the passengers mind. Anyway, if it is the smoker's car and they are the only one using it why shouldn't they smoke?
