Black box insurance

Good practice guidelines have been released to help consumers decide on having an insurance policy that uses black box technology to monitor your driving style

The ABI (Association of British Insurers) have released good practice guidelines for helping consumers make informed decisions about entering into a “pay how you drive” policy.

The technology uses GPS to log your driving behaviour. This data is then analysed and your policy tailored towards your driving style, whether that be low or high risk. Insurers will probably have different products offering incentives and reductions for low-risk driving styles.

The data could also be used to offer motorists other services, such as tracking if your car is stolen, emergency services notifications and telematics for use in assessing liability in the event of an accident. The guidance offers consumers information on how this data can be accessed under the Data Protection Act.
