Make driving more dangerous

Research by Newcastle University has suggested that making driving more dangerous and hazardous would increase the standard of driving

The research surveyed over 1500 respondents and the results suggest that drivers actually get bored at the wheel, therefore seeking some excitement by driving over the speed limit or overtaking. Researchers suggest that by making roads more hazardous, such as removing kerbs to mix pedestrian with vehicle traffic, will actually make drivers more cautious.

I would suggest that pedestrian mortality would escalate more than somewhat, they are bad enough when there are pavements. Seriously I think they should repeat the trials carried out in the Nederlands where as an experiment, in one town, they removed all the road signs and road markings, to extremely good effect, by putting the responsibility for safe progress fairly and squarely on the driver/rider. Also, while they are at it, let them remove the masses of unnecessary road signs that proliferate at every opportunity. Licence cyclists. Make all traffic lights Amber after 10 p.m until, say, six a.m with the rule ‘Stop before entry and cross at own discretion.’ (Nothing worse than sitting on a ‘bike waiting for a car to arrive to trigger the sensors in the road.) Re-examine all speed limits and set them to the 95 percentile of actual current day to day traffic speed. (This should have the effect of reducing the amount of dangerous ‘frustration’ overtaking.) Do away with cash generator cameras/radar traps and return to good solid policing by motorised traffic cops of the old school (They used common sense and were not motivated by ‘ticket targets’.) And is it not time they put similar restrictions on new car drivers to those placed on new motorcycle riders.

I completely agree with Ken Lines above. Drivers should take responsibility for their driving instead of leaving it to the authorities to think for us. When I took my car test many moons ago driving used to be a pleasure but now it is downright boring (which is why I have taken to riding a motorcycle).

Thanks, Suzi. As a bit of a Libertarian it is nice to find that, occasionally, someone agrees with me.
