Driving lessons for the under 16s

A company is offering driving lessons to children aged between 11 and 16

In an attempt to reduce the accident statistics of young drivers on Britain’s roads, children are being offered the opportunity to take driving lessons to gain experience and impart positive attitudes to road safety and driving. The course, run mainly in school holidays and weekends, costs £55 for 60 minutes and the driver should be between 11 and 16 years old and taller than 1.5 metres.

Call me a cynic if you will but I would consider that this is simply putting incomplete skills into the hands of a youngster who will think that because he has done this he can now drive. The only thing it might do is make an uninsured car thief or joy rider a little safer.

I wish I could find the company – I have an 11 year old daughter who is car crazy I live dow private road and she can drive down on occassion but I would like to find a private road network or track that she could drive on to gain more experience, her ambition is to become a racing driver. If anyone knows where we can go it would be great. By the way Suzi i think it is frustration of not being able to access what you really want to do can tempt some into the joy riding category given the right training and availablity at a reasonable cost youngsters learn the potential dangers and in most cases will respect others property and the lives of the public.

Good on them, as an ex teacher, I think road craft and the responsibility of car ownership should be part of the compulsory school curriculum. There are far more responsible teenagers who will ultimately be car owners than the minority of nuggets who cause the problems. If the cost of learning to drive correctly and safely was less, more would be attracted to do it by the correct route and hopefully the accident rate would fall
